3.1 Shell-and-tube. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger is the most common type of heat exchanger. It consists of a number of tubes (often finned) placed inside a volume (shell). One of the fluids runs through the tubes while the second fluid runs across and along the tubes to be heated. Heat Exchangerswith being the overall heat transfer coefficient, the heat transfer area, and is the log-mean temperature difference. Equation (13)(13) is used when simple counter or co-current flows exist. If the flow pattern is more complex (such as the case with most shell and tube heat exchangers), then a correction factor ( ) term is used and the
Shell and tube heat exchanger design is an iterative process, which goes through the following steps. Define process requirements for the new exchanger. Select a suitable type of shell and tube exchanger. Define design parameters such as - number of tube passes, tube size, shell ID etc. Heat exchanger calculations and modeling to get the output Tetra Pak® Indirect UHT unit PFF with tubular heat If product supply or receiving equipment fails, sterile water displaces the product and the UHT unit goes into sterile circulation. The product is heat-ed in a tube heat exchanger by an indirect hot water circuit and passes through a holding tube for the required period of time. A temperature guard automatically monitors product

Example 5.2 Miniature Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger A miniature shell-and-tube heat exchanger is designed to cool engine oil in an engine with the engine coolant (50% ethylene glycol). The engine oil at a flow rate of 0.23 kg/s enters the exchanger at 120°C and leaves at 115°C. The 50% ethylene glycol at a rate of 0.47 kg/s enters at 90°C.
